Do we love ourselves less if we are not considered beautiful by societal standards?
Beauty, or the consideration of it, seems to be key in things like self-esteem, self-worth, confidence, and even levels of socializing (the social butterfly often considers herself to be beautiful.) There was a study done that showed a significant neural response in certain areas of the brain associated with food and other things that inddicated a preference for beauty. This same study is evolving and now addressing whether or not beauty is inborn, if it's universal, or if it's symmetry and the ease of processing pretty faces that make beautiful people preferable. While society obviously will influence our thoughts and actions I feel that we all have the capacity to determine for ourselves how we ultimately feel about ourselves. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and we ultimately self select those individuals that we feel are attractive based on those concepts we feel individually are important to us.
