It definitely varies by occupation. While in the private sector like finance and business it may be acceptable to move around often but it may not be looked at in the same way in the field of education. I would say that it takes about three years at a minimum to get to know a job and begin to make an impact. In the beginning of a career three years would be acceptable but as one becomes more senior and responsibilities increase then so does the time to learn and begin to make a difference.
