Joshua only 14 and may not be mature enough to know the impact of his weight will have on him for the rest of his life. You need to help him not give up on himself. You should seek help together so you can become his coach and not just his mother. You can never let him give up on life and himself because it will only get worst. In addition to seeing a doctor try to find support groups that you can both attend with people going through the same struggles with weight. Obesity is life threatening so work at it as team to save Joshua's life.

My advice to you is to take him to a weight specialist and have him/ her tell you what he thinks of his weight. I can only imagine what you and Joshua are going through. Believe I know what it is to be suffering from weight gain. I have been weight 145 since my teens and even then i lost the weight but I gain it back. Now for your son to go through surgery at his age is risky, first i will put him in a regiment diet so he can loose the weight and then when he is old enough then he can have the surgery but with the specialist guidance.

Good Look Debbie and to your son.

My suggestion to you is to find out from your peratirtion what he/she thinks about your childs weight.Has he ever suffer from weight problems before? He will have to go under examinations to find out why he weighs 337 at his age. Have you ever checked his thyriod glana with his doctor. Sometime people who have inlarge thyriod glanas tend to suffer from weight gain. Of course your family eating has to be question and your doctor would most likely ask you about that. Your question about surgery: is out of the question for now. He will have to lose more then 100lbs before a doctor will consider him for surgery.
Have you spoken to him about how his classmates make him feel? Maybe speaking with a psychologist about his weight problem along along with him.One thing you should keep in mind is that if you work at it together he will lose weight. Talk to your son work together. its for his health.

You are brave to talk about your sons weight problem and thats a start.

Do not give up.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Debbie:
Your first step is to see your son's primary care physician. Before anything can be done, your son will need a thorough physical examinaton. Even if surgery is anticipated, your son must be in optimal condition before any surgical procedure will be performed to help prevent any possible complications. An holistic approach to weight loss will need to be pursued--psychosocial as well as physical. The eating behaviors of your family will have to be explored. Healthcare professionals will need to know what kinds of foods are bought and how they are prepared. The whole family needs to become involved. Obesity in young people is being investigated by the health professions because the problem is becoming so prevalent. More ways of dealing with the problem are known now than ever before. But, again, start with a healthcare professional. It's more than just a diet and it does involve you and your family
