Experience can supercede education. There are some who are highly educated but lack the practical skills needed to finish the job.

It totally depends on the type of job and educational requirements. Unfortunately the educational requirements specified for a position are not always consistent with the requirements of the job. Employers will create requirements assuming that they will be predictors of success. There often jobs that can be done by someone who possess good common sense and good people skills.

In my experience, personal qualifications and prior performance as they relate to the higher position are more important than educational background.
