Why is there hot water going into the cold water line in the kitchen sink?

It is possible that the temperature/pressure safety valve on your water heater is malfunctioning. This will allow hot water to back into the cold water supply. Next time, try using a bathroom faucet and see if you have the same problem there. If you do, replace the temp/pressure valve on your water heater. Are the pipes to your kitchen exposed to the sun outdoors or something? Kind of like when a garden hose is left out on the lawn of your backyard with water still in it and it sits in the sun; when you go to turn it on, it comes out blaring hot?
