Swelling of the face around the eyes, lips and ears is a good description of hives. Hives on the body may appear as small raised areas where the hair stands up on end. Bee stings and spider bites are the most common cause of hives but many things can cause such an allergic reaction.

Check the gums of the dog. If they are a normal bubble gum pink and the dog is breathing normally give Benadryl or the generic version diphenhydramine at a dose of 1 mg. per pound of body weight. It is sold as capsules or tablets. Tablets give you the ability to split them for a smaller dose. Benedryl can be given every 8-12 hrs. for 1-2 days. If the swelling increases or more severe symptoms occur seek emergency veterinary care.

If the dog's gums are a pale pink, greyish or whitish color it is a more severe allergic reaction or anaphelaxis. Seek veterinary care immediately. A dog can die of a severe allergic reaction just like people can.

In many cases we can not be certain what the dog is reacting to. We often assume a bee or spider if the circumstances fit. The possibility of another allergic reaction in the future is possible. I recommend you keep Benadryl on hand at all times so you are prepared if another reaction occurs.
